ABSTRACT 

The Nigerian railway has been revived in recent years but yet the revenue accessing to it have remain largely low. This is attributable to its ticketing system and ability to reach the people who can make reservations and pay for tickets. In the project the railway electronic ticketing system will be developed in this project to take care of some of this challenge. This will be done by designing an e-ticketing for the railway system using structure System Analysis and design methodology (SSA.DM).The system ticketing and reservation and payment is not only designed but will be also implemented using PHP and MySQL database Management implementation of the system that will make it available for public use. 

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The challenges of technology today are greater than ever before. Within a generation, computers have transformed the everyday tasks of the workforce computer use has infiltrated almost everywhere. Data management capabilities have greatly enhanced resource management. However, accompanying the positive effects are the challenges of implementing, supporting, and funding these technologies in the world of transportation.

Railways in Nigeria are operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation. As of 2003, Nigeria’s poorly maintained rail system had 3,557 kilometers of 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge track. The country has two major rail lines: one connects Lagos on the Bight of Benin and Nguru in the northern state of Yobe; the other connects Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta and Maiduguri in the northeastern state of  Borno. In order to remedy the poor condition, efficiency, and profitability of the nation’s railroads, the government is seeking to privatize the Nigerian Railroad Corporation (Wee Kim Li, 2007). Under the privatization plan, three separate concessions of 25–30 years would be granted to private-sector companies to run railroads in the western, central, and eastern regions. However, there is an inherent challenge of ticket booking, as one need to go to the station for ticket booking.

Transportation infrastructure is critical to sustain economic growth because people want to improve their standard of living and they see increased income as the way to achieve that goal, transportation system enhancement are in turns a means of maintaining or improving economic opportunities, quality of life and ultimately income for people in a particular region Lucas (1998).

Investment in transportation infrastructure is critical to sustained economic growth. Mobility studies show that transportation is absolutely essential to economic productivity and remains competitive in the global economy. An international study found every 10 percent increase in travel speed; labour market expands 15 percent and productivity by 3 percent (Barrister and Berechinan. 2000).

Narrowing the gap between cutting-edge technology and its applications, as well as identifying the missing links for applying technology in transportation and booking system will be the ongoing challenge. This research work focuses on electronic ticking and information systems and technologies for Railway Company in Nigeria.

An electronic railway ticketing system is a computerized system that is designed to collect, store and retrieve information as well as conduct transactions related to passengers and trains. The idea behind a web-based railway ticketing and payment system was originally designed and incorporated by airlines operators.
