INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

State-of-the-art computer technology has undergone an almost incomprehensible transformation, analogous to the evolution from NIPOST to e-mail. Although the rudimentary scope, goals, and objectives of the transportation community have not changed significantly, the challenges of technology today are greater than ever before. Within a generation, computers have transformed the everyday tasks of the workforce computer use has infiltrated almost everywhere. Data management capabilities have greatly enhanced resource management. However, accompanying the positive effects are the challenges of implementing, supporting, and funding these technologies in the world of transportation.

Narrowing the gap between cutting-edge technology and its applications, as well as identifying the missing links for applying technology in transportation will be the ongoing challenge. This paper focusing on documents the state-of-the-practice in information systems and technologies for Railway Company in Nigeria.

Daily activities of man involve moving from one place to another. Such movements may take long distance. Essentially, transportation is the movement of goods and people from one place to another through specified mode such as air, water and land (rail and road). In Yinkore (2005), transport development is one of the indispensable catalysts for stimulating the tempo of a nation’s socio-economic, political and cultural development. This therefore imposes on every government the imperative for the development of an efficient, flexible, dynamic, and integrated transport system as a means of binding the various components of a society at the local government, state, national or international levels. The level of transport development in any society largely determines and reflects the level of development and its function in society. An efficient transport system stimulates and enhances the productiveuses of human and material resources and thus economic development of the society. In the socio-political context, transport provides the instrument for enhancing human interaction, blending of cultures as well as the integration of socio-political groupings. Nigeriagovernment’s interest in the provision of roads, highways, and railway facilities is manifestedin the enormous investment in the transport sector.

Transport is important because it enables trade between persons, which is essential for the development of civilizations.Transport infrastructure consists of the fixed installations including roads, railways, airways, waterways, canalsand pipelines and terminals such as airports, railway stations, bus stations,warehouses, trucking terminals, refuelling depots (including fuelling docks and fuel stations) and seaports. Terminals may be used both for interchange of passengers and cargo and for maintenance.

Railway as the main artery of national economy is the backbone of the transport and traffic systems in China for both freight and passenger transportation (Yuanjin, 2000). Vehicles traveling on these networks may include automobiles,bicycles, buses, trains,trucks, people, helicopters, watercraft, spacecraft and aircraft. Operations deal with the way the vehicles are operated, and the procedures set for this purpose including financing, legalities and policies. In the transport industry, operations and ownership of infrastructure can be either public or private, depending on the country and mode.

Passenger transport may be public, where operators provide scheduled services, or private. Freight transport has become focused on containerization, although bulk transport is used for large volumes of durable items. Transport plays an important part in economic growth and globalization, but most types cause air pollution and use large amounts of land. While it is heavily subsidized by governments, good planning of transport is essential to make traffic flow and restrain urban sprawl. Railway transport or is Rail transport is a means of conveyance of passengers and goods, by way of wheeled vehicles running on rails. It is also commonly referred to as train transport. 

The previous state of railway in Nigeria was done manually where the booking process was sluggish in nature. In the existing system the method of railway transport service involves passengers going physically to the railway station where they queue up and wait for their turn to reach so that they can be given seat to sit. For a passenger to be given a ticket to travel he has to wait for some time for his turn to reach before he can be given a ticket to travel.

Railways in Nigeria are operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation. As of 2003, Nigeria’s poorly maintained rail system had 3,557 kilometers of 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) gauge track. The country has two major rail lines: one connects Lagos on the Bight of Benin and Nguru in the northern state of Yobe; the other connects Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta and Maiduguri in the northeastern state of  Borno. In order to remedy the poor condition, efficiency, and profitability of the nation’s railroads, the government is seeking to privatize the Nigerian Railroad Corporation. Under the privatization plan, three separate concessions of 25–30 years would be granted to private-sector companies to run railroads in the western, central, and eastern regions. However, there is an inherent challenge of ticket booking, as one needs to go to the station for ticket booking.

Transportation infrastructure is critical to sustain economic growth because people want to improve their standard of living and they see increased income as the way to achieve that goal, transportation system enhancement are in turns a means of maintaining or improving economic opportunities, quality of life and ultimately income for people in a particular region Lucas (1998).

Investment in transportation infrastructure is critical to sustained economic growth. Mobility studies show that transportation is absolutely essential to economic productivity and remains competitive in the global economy. An international study found every 10 percent increase in travel speed; labour market expands 15 percent and productivity by 3 percent (Barrister and Berechinan. 2000).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Transportation of people is increasing as our society grows and the demand for railway services that can provide high-speed and high-capacity transportation is becoming greater. Thus, the issue of knowing the schedules for railway transportation system in Nigeria and the ticket booking process from inception had been a thing of concern. Right from the introduction of rail transport system in Nigeria, the steps of achieving a successful journey using this means of transportation involves one going to the station to find out the route, schedule, and departure time. Another challenging part involves queuing   up for ticket booking especially during the festive season.

The existing system has the following inherent problems and these will be solved by our proposed system.

i.The existing system is a manual system 

ii.It is sluggish in nature since travellers go to the rail station waiting for their train to arrive

iii.It is not informative and reliable.
