abstract Library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources, made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing. Thus the process of handling a library manually is very troublesome and clumsy. As regards to this point of view, the computerized system for handling the activities of library management provides a comprehensive way to lessen physical labour, to reduce complexity of the manual system and soon. This project work aim to design and implement a computerized library management system. The library management system was design and implemented using the HTML (Hypertext mark-up language), CSS (Cascading style sheet), PHP (Hypertext pre-processor) and My SQL database. The system was developed using the V-Model software development approach. An extensive evaluation of the project determines that the project achieved many of its predefined objectives. CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study The Emergence of Internet and its technologies has led to the death of distance and collapsed the entire world into a global village and have added value to our day to day activities especially in our universities, it has been able to facilitate the revolution of changes, which optimize performance and profitability by provides solution to one of the key business and communication barriers, distance and difficulties associated in the manual system of doing things. A library can be defined as a room or building where books are kept and referenced. It is an area of multifarious activity on book management. A library as a repository of knowledge, houses collections of books, both reference and general, technical reports, periodicals, journals, conference proceedings and the likes according to Adamson and Veronica, (2008). The acquisition, cataloguing, bindery and circulation sections of the library undertake the acquiring, organizing, maintaining and circulation of the books/library materials respectively. When the library through the acquisition section of the library acquires a book, its record is taken and accession number is given to the book after which the book will be sent to cataloguing section of the library. Under this section, the book will be carefully studied and given catalogue number before it will be sent to circulation section of the library as the case may be. In the context of technological advancement, computer is playing a leading and indispensable role. This is based on its ability to provide or perform a lot of tasks. Based on this, the purpose of this study is to discourage the manual and time wasted in the process of going through bookshelves in search of books or information or data(s) in the library and also to make research material available at a point according to Adepoju, E. O. (2009). In Nigeria as a developing country, most institutions and large organization are not yet able to create or setup standard library for their organizations especially schools (higher school in the country), thereby making it difficult for their members to have access to research data and valuable materials. It also limits them from knowing what is happening in the globe. It is likely one of the major cause or out-dated knowledge that students suffer in institution of higher learning in Nigeria. Library service System is an application which refers to library systems which are generally small or medium in size. It is used by librarian to manage the library using a computerized system where he/she can record various transactions like issue of books, return of books, addition of new books, addition of new students etc. Books and student maintenance Modules are also included in this system which would keep track of the students using the library and also a detailed description about the books a library contains Anie, S. O. (2006). With this computerized system there will be no loss of book record or member record which generally happens when a non computerized system is used. In addition, report module is also included in Library Management System. If user position is admin, the user is able to generate different kinds of reports like lists of students registered, list of books, issue and return reports. All these modules are able to help librarian to manage the library with more convenience and in a more efficient way as compared to library systems which are not computerized.
